W-W-WOW, W Retreat & Spa Maldives

Thank you so much for dropping by the new blog site. This, of course, marks a whole new beginning for A Lil’ Fat Monkey. The blog has come a long way from its humble food diary beginnings. Nobody knew where this would go from day one. I guess time flies and without knowing we’ve been doing this for over 4-years now and we’ve finally taken the huge dot com leap! How wonderful is that?

For readers who’ve stayed with us, we sincerely thank you for your immense support. All those emails, comments, and even phone calls, have all contributed towards our betterment and formed the basis of the new site. And for those of your who’ve not stumbled upon the blog before, you’ll get to from here forth.

And what a better way to welcome and put you at ease with the new site than with a post of our recent trip to the Maldives.

W Retreat & Spa Maldives_1.png

The W Resort and Spa in Maldives is an oasis of upscale cool in the Indian Ocean and might just have the most unique service crew in the world. Here, they call themselves talents. And my, what a talented bunch they are. All dressed in designer whites, yet looking casually cool in their Ray-ban aviators as they attended to us.

Me: “What juices do you have?”

Ms. Talent: “What would you like to have, sir?

Me: “Well, that depends on what my options are.”

Ms. Talent: “We can make you anything you wish for.”

Everything at the W is masterfully orchestrated to surround us with style, service and comfort. The Whatever/Whenever team is dedicated, yet non-intrusive, and is on hand to provide us with whatever we want, whenever and wherever we want it – but only if we wanted it. At other times, these talents just blend quietly into the background leaving us to the comfort of our own devices.

W Retreat & Spa Maldives_2.png

As appealing as this service concept sounds, be warned that in reality while most of the Whatever/Whenever services are complimentary, some can come with a hefty price tag. For example, a full bag of laundry cost USD79, while an exclusive in-room dinning BBQ hamper for two on your own private deck can set you back quite a bit. So choose whatever you want lightly, or only live sumptously whenever you have a pretty high credit limit on your credit card to financially survive the trip.

Having said that, lets not forget that W is also the same brand that can bring us such extravagance without being over the top, providing every guest with a unique lifestyle experience which only the brand can offer. And that’s a promise they can certainly live up to.

So, it is with no hesitation that we recommend the W Maldives if you’re in the market for an über chic resort honeymoon isolated from the rest of the world. This modern masterpiece is set on a piece of priceless gem in the middle of the ocean – Fesdu Island. It is simply gorgeous. Encased in white sand, the peaceful island is as close to paradise as one can ever hope to get with palm draping over azure waters and surrounded neatly by coral paths bursting with tropical colours. Better yet, the resort maintains a no children under-13 policy. Who says you can’t get some peace and quiet in this world?

W Retreat & Spa Maldives_3.png

The resort itself, the very first Retreat in the W Hotels brand, with its contemporary approach focused on a lifestyle-oriented concept comes complete with all the mod cons of a contemporary hotel, minus any European or North American attitude. Cast away yet firmly connected, natural yet designed. Secluded yet welcoming. Such is its playful style and contradiction.

We found traditional Maldivian exteriors perfectly harmonising with the island’s simplicity while concealing a more cutting edge interior on the inside. Take our twin-leveled 188-sqft Beach Oasis retreat for instance, which features an extensive state of the art BOSE sound system, 42’’ plasma screen TV, a private plunge pool and sun lounge with a circular double day bed (perfect for some outdoor romance), our very own barbecue pit for private dining, outdoor tropical showers and day beds for lolling in the lap of luxury.

W Retreat & Spa Maldives_4.png

And what will you do here, while you wait for the sun to set? W offers a host of activities to flirt with our monkey senses. We found ourselves attempting to balance our bodies & minds while doing a tree pose with the resident yogi on the beach – which turned out to be one big laughable hour; chilled at SIP while feeling the mood with clear chill-out music with a glass of Fluer de Lye (the bar’s very own signature mixed berries & champagne cocktail) and overlooking the twilight coloured skies. The energetic duo, Cumi and Ciki, went bikini-running on the heavenly stretch of powdery beach, swam, and sunbathe while I had a freaked out moment admiring the shallow corals below me – beautiful things they were but just a tad too close for comfort.

W Retreat & Spa Maldives_5.png

Then by the time the sun sets low over the horizon, we turned into gluttons and delighted our senses at FIRE. We indulged in the resort’s very own al-fresco BBQ-themed restaurant and dined carnivorously underneath the twinkling milky way covered sky. The moon was also out to serenade us all evening. Oh wait, or was that the just the state-of-the-art BOSE speakers again? Spit-roasted lamb or suckling pig greeted us at the western BBQ section, while the Mongolian BBQ station required us to personalised our own ingredients for our dishes. Next to that, an open Tandoor oven churned out hot Na’an breads, accompanied by a variety of curry dishes and traditional condiment completed the spread.

If you’re lucky and not to mention rich enough to stay here, you’ll be glad to find that there is even a dance club banging with the hotel’s custom brand of music right under the island – 15 steps below to be precise. It’s the only dance club here in the Maldives, perfect for the hip clienteles they cater to party until the early mornings.

W Retreat & Spa Maldives_6.png

In truth, the W’s only real rival is their very own business-class like seaplane lounge, where their Whatever/Whenever signature service starts. Welcome to the world of W – where innovative design, comfort, fashion, music and art socialises together in one happy universe.

Note: Our visit to the Maldives is courtesy of wonderful people at W Retreat & Spa, Maldives. Have we told you lately that we wuv (sic) you wery, wery (double sic) much?

OMG, first i’d ask for avocado juice. then i’d try to really test them for asking for human teardrop juice and mosquito blood juice (yep, puteri gunung ledang is my inspiration!). anyway, this looks like the holiday to end all holidays! but i refuse to read the remainder of this entry right now while trapped in my chilly office cubicle :D

Oh wow, just like your modus operandi, you are indeed first in everything you do. Thanks for being the first to comment on the new site.

RE: Puteri Gunung Ledang inspiration… maybe it’s easier for them to do a Puteri Lautan India with clown fish tears and starfish juice for your cocktail. LOL

Yay I’m second! Well technically I’m 3rd but considering the second comment is a reply, so I’m second! :P Haha.. I’m so envious lah! Such a gorgeous resort! Did you get sun burnt? Show me your peeling skin :P

Yeah, you are the second. Well my skin isn’t peeling much. Thank God! But it was burnt nevertheless. Unfortunately for me, my skin doesn’t retain a tan long enough. Need to continue baking in the sun to maintain a healthy bronzey skin.
