Krabi, Thailand: You Make Me Smile

I don’t know who the original singers or writers of the song below are. I just vaguely remembered it from a TV commercial in the 90’s (or was it the 80’s?). I was still a child then but its lyrics came to mind when I was going through the pictures from my recent trip to Krabi. Recent is use very loosely here. But anyhow, the words of the song just sums up everything I love about traveling in first place.

This post is dedicated to the everyday folks in Krabi who welcomed every visitor to the land of smiles with their big hearts, big cheers and big smiles. They even made all our bellies smiled happily too.

Thank you or should I say ?????????? [khop-kun-khráp]

A smile is quite a funny thing,
It lightens up your face,
And when it’s gone you never find
Its secret hiding place.

But far more wonderful it is,
To see what smiles can do.
You smile at me, I smile at you,
And so one smile makes two.

She smiles at someone, since I smiled,
And then that one smiles back,
And that one smiles until, in truth,
You fail in keeping track.

And since a smile can do great good,
By cheering hearts of care.
Let’s smile and not forget the fact
That smiles go everywhere

Smile, Smile,
It isn’t hard to do,
Smile from your heart,
And the world smiles with you.

C&C: Yeah, it a little reminder that there are still genuine hearts out there in this greed-filled world.

J: I dunno how I can remember it. But some reason seeing them smile just brings back memories of the song.

Thule: Actually, I found them smiling even as we approach them. Just genuinely friendly. Love them

this also reminds me of that nat king cole song. the one that goes, "smile though your heart is aching…" i assume these folks in krabi don't have easy lives, but the fact that they can still be so warm to strangers is quite an inspiration =)
i've actually never been to krabi, partly cos i'm not a beach lover (i hate sand! and i kinda hate the sun too, heheh). but after a month of dealing with stern, serious people at work, i'd definitely like to escape to a cheerful place like this.

Sean, actually yeah that song did come to mind too. But i thought it was too heartbreaking for a cheerful post so I scraped the idea. But in retrospect, that would have been a better choice knowing that most of them have it hard.

Traces of the 2004 Tsunami can still be seen everywhere – most of the town's building have been rebuilt and are still shiny. I guess the only way to get through the harsh life IS by smiling through it all.

Hop on a plane to Krabi lah. You really don't have to go to the beach, cos it's not the most beautiful one around anyway. Stay by the pool or just head for massages 3 times a day just like what we did.

@qwazymonkey: That is SUCH an exaggeration. Where got massage 3x a day? Eesh.

Max. pun twice a day, for four days straight… :P

@AugustDiners: Here's a tip, go to the biggest massage parlour on the main strip and ask the masseurs where to eat. They know their stuff, makan-wise. Of course, Monkey probably remembers the names of the places we went to better than I did. :P

the BM version too. it goes something like "kau tersenyum, ku tersenyum, kemesraan menguntum…senyummmm, membahagiakan…". where have the fun days of Thundercats and Mask gone, eh? To Krabi, of course! :) must make it a point to visit one day!
